How to Choose Colors for App Store Screenshots

Color helps a screenshot set feel recognizable, but readability matters more than following a trend. Start with the app's existing brand palette and assign each color a clear job: background, headline, supporting text, and accent.

Build a small working palette

  • Background: one dominant color or restrained gradient.
  • Headline: a high-contrast text color that remains readable at small sizes.
  • Accent: one color for arrows, highlights, or feature callouts.
  • Neutral: a quiet tone for supporting details and device treatments.

Contrast and Scannability

Preview the set against both light and dark surrounding interfaces. Check headline contrast, avoid placing text on the busiest part of a screenshot, and make sure accent colors do not become indistinguishable from the app UI.

Use gradients and extracted colors carefully

A gradient can connect multiple slides, while colors sampled from the uploaded interface can make the design feel native to the product. Keep transitions smooth and avoid adding so many colors that the device screen loses focus.

Experiment with gradients, solid backgrounds, patterns, and extracted colors in the screenshot editor.
